Counselling for Family Difficulties

Understanding difficult family relationships and the patterns they can create.

Family relationships can be a source of connection and belonging, but they can also be complicated, painful or exhausting. You may be dealing with conflict, estrangement, difficult boundaries, changing roles or patterns that have existed for many years.

What are Family Difficulties?

Family difficulties can include conflict between relatives, parent–adult child difficulties, sibling relationships, estrangement, caring pressures, blended-family issues, boundary problems and the impact of longstanding family patterns.

How might Family Difficulties Affect you?

You may feel caught between loyalty and your own needs, responsible for keeping the peace, guilty when you set boundaries, or frustrated that the same patterns keep repeating.

When might Counselling be helpful?

Counselling may be helpful when family relationships are affecting your wellbeing, confidence or other relationships, or when you want to understand your own part in a pattern and respond differently.

How can Counselling help?

Counselling can help you explore family dynamics, roles and expectations, recognise patterns, understand your emotional responses and develop clearer boundaries and choices in how you relate to others.

What counselling with Sarah might look like?

My relational approach focuses on understanding what happens between people as well as what happens within you. Individual counselling can help you consider your needs, responsibilities and choices without requiring other family members to attend.

Taking care of yourself

Notice where you are taking responsibility for things that are not yours to carry. Creating space, seeking support and setting realistic boundaries can be useful while you work through difficult family relationships.
